History of North Myrtle Beach SC

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Myrtle Beach was home to tribes such as the Waccamaaw and Winyah Indians. As the surrounding area became settled pirates like "Blackbeard" began raiding the local seas. The wonderful weather and gorgeous beaches began bringing vacationers from surrounding areas. In the early 1900s the Conway and Seashore Railroad was introduced and made access, to what was then called "New Town," easy. This railroad caused great growth for the town. Soon its name was changed to Myrtle Beach, derived from the wax myrtle plant. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel devastated the area but the city bounced back to what we know it as today. A place for the whole family with world-class resorts, golf courses, dining, amusement parks and entertainment.
